Sustainability practises are at the heart of ImpactBuying, the biggest logistics chain map provider.

The client

ImpactBuying is just the company the world needs right now. Putting actionable goals regarding sustainability to use in their chain management software. Every product you own contains labels and certifications that are double checked through ImpactBuying and such. True supply chain management takes into considerations fair trade working conditions, transparent labelling, sourcing from local communities and easy communications between farm, factory and family.

Target audience

Funny enough, the people we sat around the table with and brainstormed with in the initial workshop session AND the persona devised from that are all women. Highly-educated, empathic women working in food quality management, sustainability efforts and fair trade mapping.

They have a disconnect between their goals; to map the world of food and create better working conditions for workers, and the software they use. Which is bloated, uninspiring and difficult to use.

Design challenge

Supply chain mapping is one of the most difficult dashboarding software. People from all different walks of life have access to it, from rural farmers with a cellular connection to the CEO of Jumbo who checks in on sustainability goals being met. On top of that you work with a lot of different data sets. The main focus was to make everything context-dependant, readable and more discoverable.

Introduction to Design Thinking workshop

Starting up a new project and drafting up the MVP between two companies can take literal years of due diligence. But through hosting a design thinking workshop, Yummygum and ImpactBuying got to do it in two sessions.

We ask the right questions about mission, vision, target audience, competitors, users and possible threats up ahead. We learn the language of new disciplines (a farmer in the Global South or a sustainability manager working at Jumbo), learn their daily routine, their frustrations and focus on solutions.

I love creating a priority matrix and check off the lesser important issues so we can focus on the core essence of the project; which was filling in new data in the most user friendly way.

Key results

When your client is all about system mapping, you can’t just draw up sketches in Figma; you have to dig deeper to understand the depth of the chain. Logistics and supply chains are the biggest known secret our world has; there is food on the shelves and clothes in your closet. But once you go down the rabbit hole, there is no way of getting our, really.

Working with ImpactBuying has changed my perspective on logistics, it’s really in the power of the individual. Not the consuming one, but the ones mapping out the chain and asking the important questions. I hope that with this platform, we contribute to not only the UX of the quality manager but also that of the rural cotton farmer and their family.
